Having survived the crash, Dr. Robotnik is aware that the Chaos Emeralds are somewhere on the Floating Island. He also detects the energy of a giant Chaos Emerald on the island, which he can use to re-launch the Death Egg. With this new plan in mind, the doctor starts to build a base on the Floating Island while catching the local Animals to turn them into Badniks.
Days later, Dr. Robotnik meets Knuckles the Echidna , the guardian of the Floating Island. Learning of Knuckles' position and duty, the doctor tells him that he is a scientist who has come to "investigate" the Death Egg.
He also "warns" Knuckles about Sonic , who is an evil hedgehog that plans to steal the island's Master Emerald. Believing Robotnik, Knuckles teams up with him to stop Sonic. Meanwhile, Sonic is relaxing somewhere away from the Floating Island until his friend, Tails , detects a Chaos Emerald energy reaction out at sea with his Jewel Radar. While Tails ponders if this reaction has something to do with the tsunami that appeared days ago, Sonic finds a ring with ancient inscriptions on it that gives him a strong sense of nostalgia and prompts him to set out on another adventure.
Eventually, Sonic and Tails head out to investigate the incident out at sea. Arriving with Tails at the Floating Island in the Tornado , Sonic uses the seven Chaos Emeralds he had acquired prior to turn into Super Sonic and begins exploring the island while Tails tries to follow. Shortly after arriving on the island however, Knuckles pulls off a cheap shot on Sonic from below, causing him to lose his super transformation and drop the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles proceeds to take the Chaos Emeralds before running off.
Now having to retrieve the Emeralds again and stop Dr. Robotnik , Sonic and Tails make their way through the island, dealing with Robotnik and Knuckles' attacks along the way. Eventually, they arrive at Launch Base Zone , Dr.
Robotnik's base where he has almost finished re-building the Death Egg. At the end of this Zone , the Death Egg is ready to take off. Fortunately, local tremors causes him to lose his balance and fall down from the pillar he is on, allowing Sonic and Tails free passage. In the end, the duo manages to jump onto a platform on the Death Egg just as it starts to take off.
There, Robotnik returns to defeat Sonic through excessive force with the Beam Rocket. As Sonic and Tails defeat Robotnik once more, the battle has already taken its toll on the Death Egg during a critical point of its launch, and the space fortress plummets back to the Floating Island while Sonic and Tails watch from afar.

Whether you're a fan of the world's favorite 'hog or not, his newest adventure is a revolution in gaming. Okay, okay, so the story line's nothing new.
The Death Egg that blew up in Sonic 3 didn't really blow up, and now Sonic has to roam Robotnik's Island one more time to destroy it. Remember Knuckles, the echidna from Sonic 3?
He's back, and this time you can play as him. Even better, there are really two different games in one. As Sonic, you follow one story line, and as Knuckles you follow another. Both characters play through the first four zones of the game, but they finish it by going through entirely different areas. Knuckles has two moves -- flying and climbing walls.
These moves enable him to reach play areas that Sonic can't. So even in the zones they both travel through, the game play is very different.
So you say that's not enough, it's still just another Sonic game with another fuzzy character added? Well, try this on for size. If you hook up your Sonic and Knuckles game with Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 we can't tell you how yet -- we promised Sega , you can replay those games as Knuckles in the one- player mode only.
That's right, backward compatibility. It's never been done before. Sure, you say, there's nothing new to play in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, right?
As Knuckles, you have access to areas in both games that were unreachable before. In fact, in Sonic 3, you'll find Acts that you've never seen before, and best of all, they're much tougher than those in the original game -- it makes them worth playing again.
Stay tuned, because Sega promises further compatibility with other Sonic games, all to be announced soon. If you're not into the backward- compatibility thing, you probably wanna know about this new game itself. Seven regular zones, all with original themes, are filled with new gadgets and mechanical Robotnik cronies.
Familiar power- ups abound, but there are two new Bonus Rounds -- a pinball-style bounce- fest and something that resembles a slot machine. The Special Stage is the same as in Sonic 3, but it's much tougher and has several interesting new elements, such as yellow balls you can jump off.
The game play, fortunately, is much tougher than Sonic 3's. Sonic and Knuckles both have all of Sonic's traditional moves, and they're exactly the same.
The mushrooms don't inflict damage, but knock their unfortunate victim back, potentially into other hazards. Stationary windvane rooster bots that periodically inhale deeply, then release with a gust of wind.
Scorpion bots that roll along the ground, occasionally pausing to whip out their probing stingers at nearby hedgehogs. It's a very difficult attack to avoid. Giant caterpillar bots that swim around in quicksand and only occasionally leap out to attack. Like the original Nal Caterkiller bots, they can only be damaged on their spike-free noggins. These heavily guarded bots charade as plain rocks until you get close enough.
Rolling into them is the only way to destroy them. These ghosts inhabit the pyramids of Sandopolis. They hover harmlessly in the air until the lights go out, then attack en masse.
They can be momentarily scared away with a spin, but only turning on the lights will curb their assault. Fiery caterpillar-esque bots more or less identical to Sonic 3's Meramora. Only their heads are vulnerable. Self-destructing bots that charade as plain stones until approached, then blow themselves up into a rocky shower. They can't be destroyed, only avoided, but you still get points when they explode. Bizarre eye bots that release little clouds of vapor. Step into a cloud and it slows your character down almost to a halt, siphoning Rings out one at a time.
Jump or Spin Dash to brush away the cloud. Robotnik-shaped robots that fly down from the sky and fire laser blasts at approaching hedgehogs. When playing as Knuckles, these guys usually take Robotnik's place in the boss fights.
These bots hover slowly through the air, but halt to fling a spiked mace as soon as Sonic approaches. They'll repeat the attack constantly until destroyed. These bots zip by and pause briefly to prod Sonic with one of their pointy spear tips. They're difficult to hit. There's no other place to download them.
Request aside, this is really great and contains pretty much every song in the Sonic series. Pretty nice to have.
